Hind limb degeneration is a progressive neurological disease of older rats characterized by knuckling and dragging of the hind feet, then progressive weakness and paralysis. Management involves ramp modifications to enclosure, soft bedding to prevent pressure sores, and pain management if needed ($50–$200). Bite wounds from cagemates, substrate injuries, or self-inflicted scratching from ectoparasites can develop into abscesses in rats.
