Crested geckos have lower UV requirements than many lizards but still require UVB lighting and calcium supplementation with vitamin D3 to maintain healthy bone density. Geckos fed diets deficient in calcium or with improper calcium-to-phosphorus ratios develop MBD — soft, rubbery bones that deform under the gecko's own body weight, causing limb deformities, jaw malformation, and pathological fractures. Treatment involves calcium and vitamin D3 supplementation, corrected diet and lighting, and in severe cases, supportive care and pain management ($150–$600). Established skeletal deformities may be permanent.

Unlike leopard geckos and many other lizards, crested geckos do NOT regenerate their tails after autotomy. Tail loss is permanent. While tail drop itself is not a medical emergency, chronic stress in crested geckos causes weight loss, anorexia, and immunosuppression that can lead to serious secondary illness. Stress reduction — appropriate temperature (68–78°F), vertical space with climbing opportunities, low-traffic placement of enclosure, and avoiding excessive handling — prevents most stress-related problems. Though less prone to respiratory infections than some reptiles, crested geckos kept at temperatures above their preferred range (ideal: 72–78°F) with poor ventilation can develop bacterial respiratory infections. Signs include open-mouth breathing, mucus around the mouth, and lethargy. Culture and antibiotic treatment ($100–$400). Temperature and ventilation management are the primary preventive measures. Crested geckos should not be kept above 85°F — heat stress itself is life-threatening.

Crested geckos from wild-caught or mixed-source backgrounds may harbor pinworms and coccidian protozoa. Light parasitic loads may cause no clinical signs; heavy burdens cause weight loss, diarrhea, and debilitation. Fecal testing ($75–$100) allows identification of parasites. Pinworms are treated with fenbendazole; coccidia with trimethoprim-sulfa or ponazuril ($75–$200 for treatment courses). Captive-bred crested geckos from reputable breeders are usually parasite-free.

Floppy Tail Syndrome (FTS) occurs when crested geckos rest upside down on enclosure walls for extended periods, causing the tail to flip over the back repeatedly. Over time, this causes permanent spinal deviation. FTS is a husbandry issue — inadequate cork bark, bamboo tubes, or horizontal resting surfaces prompt geckos to rest in unnatural positions. Providing multiple horizontal resting options and flat cork surfaces corrects the environmental cause. There is no medical treatment for established spinal deviation, but the condition is typically cosmetic and doesn't cause pain in most cases.
