Diagnosis requires visualization of mites via transillumination of the trachea or cytology. Treatment with ivermectin or moxidectin applied topically is effective if caught early ($50–$150 total). Knemidocoptes mites burrow under the scales of the legs and feet, causing crusty, scaly, thickened lesions. Severe infestations can cause lameness and permanent scale deformity. Female canaries, particularly those bred repeatedly or with calcium deficiencies, can develop egg binding — the inability to pass a fully formed egg. The bound egg compresses abdominal organs and the cloaca, causing straining, puffed feathers, and progressive weakness. Emergency treatment includes warm baths, humidity, calcium supplementation, and oxytocin/prostaglandin administration. If the egg doesn't pass within hours, manual removal or surgery is required ($100–$600). Prevention via proper nutrition (cuttlebone, calcium supplements) and limiting breeding cycles reduces risk.

Canary pox is a highly contagious viral disease transmitted by mosquitoes and direct contact. The wet (diphtheritic) form causes lesions in the mouth and throat that can obstruct breathing; the dry (cutaneous) form causes pox lesions on the skin and feet. There is no specific treatment — supportive care ($100–$400) and prevention of secondary infections are the main interventions. Vaccines exist for canaries used in aviculture. Mortality is variable; young birds are most vulnerable. Mosquito control is essential for outdoor aviaries.
